Visionaries & Voices Mission Statement
The mission of Visionaries &Voices is to provide a nurturing home-base for
artists with disabilities to grow and succeed. We value a world in which
artists with disabilities not only create and share their works of art, but
also are given the chance to show the community at large what it means to be
creative and alive without limits.
Background
Visionaries and Voices started in 2000 as a
grass-roots effort among social-workers in the area who were astounded by the
art created by people with disabilities in their homes. The supporters made
connections with local galleries to showcase these works, and these shows
created enough momentum to help establish a studio-gallery specifically for
the artists. On August 1, 2003, Visionaries and Voices opened its doors at
Essex Studios in Walnut Hills, home to more than 100 professional artists.
Selected Exhibitions & Awards
Winner of the 2004 Leadership Award from the Inclusion Network
“Best New Voice” in Cincinnati Citybeat’s Best of Cincinnati 2004: “Long
overdue, Visionaries & Voices acts as an outlet for disabled and ‘outsider’
artists, with occasional showcases at their Essex Studio gallery and places
like Fitton Center for Creative Arts, libraries, and – we hope – more to
come.”
“The story of Visionaries and Voices is another reason Cincinnati is a good
place to live… This is fresh, fascinating art, with incredible human stories
behind it. Bravo to Visionaries and Voices, those who support it, and the
artists involved.” The Cincinnati Enquirer
